Battle as a soldier from one of three nations and utilize a wide range of tactics to seize territory and drive your enemies from the battlefield.
Three nations are represented in Heroes & Generals: the United States, Germany, and the Soviet Union. Characters begin as simple infantrymen and as they gain experience, they advance along an experience tree that lets them specialize in other branches of the military, such as tank driver, pilot, recon (sniper), or paratrooper. Each specialization has its own equipment it can use, from an array of hand-to-hand weapons to tanks and planes for the tankers and pilots, and all equipment can be extensively modified.
The battles themselves take place across large areas meant to resemble various WWII-era cities and military installations. Combat is low-key and fairly realistic, and with the large, wide-open maps, tactics and strategy often count for more than just having a quick trigger finger. Most battles pit two of the nations against each other, but a few are full-scale, three-way brawls. In any case, the object of each battle is to capture all opposing spawn points or kill enemies until they have no spawns left.
At higher levels, players can take part in the “generals game,” purchasing and maneuvering mixed forces across a map of Europe to capture cities for their chosen nation. Battles between opposing forces can be auto-resolved if highly unbalanced or fought out by actual players in the cases of close battles. The results of these battles change the tactical map, and at the end of every session, the nation that wins the overall war is granted bonus rewards.
